How the math works
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. One cubic yard covers 324 square feet at 1 inch deep, so the formula is: square footage times depth in inches, divided by 324. For most beds, a 2 to 3 inch layer is the sweet spot. Two inches is enough to refresh an established bed that already has a base; three inches is better for a new bed or one where you want maximum weed suppression.
For example, a bed that is 300 square feet mulched at 3 inches deep works out to about 2.8 cubic yards. Round up to 3 and you are covered. The calculator above does this for you, and you can adjust the depth to see how it changes the total.
A few things that affect the number
- Depth matters most. Going from 2 to 3 inches increases your mulch needs by 50 percent, so decide up front whether you are refreshing or building up.
- Existing mulch counts. If you already have a solid 1 to 2 inch base, you may only need a thin refresh layer, not a full 3 inches.
- Odd shapes are fine. Break curved or irregular beds into rough rectangles, estimate each, and add them up. It does not need to be perfect.
- Settling happens. Mulch compresses a bit after installation and rain, so it is fine to round up rather than down.
When to mulch on the North Shore
Late spring, after your spring cleanup and once the beds are edged and weeded, is the ideal time to mulch. The soil has warmed up, the weeds have not taken hold yet, and a fresh layer sets the beds up to look sharp all summer. Some homeowners also do a lighter refresh in the fall, but spring is the big one.
